Manchester United have lost their status as the world’s most expensive football squad to Manchester City.

City have the most expensive squad in football history, according to research group CIES Football Observatory, after their summer spending meant that the total cost of their squad is £775m.

That is marginally higher than the squad cost of PSG, though the permanent signing of Kylian Mbappe may change that next summer.

United’s squad was assembled for a cost of just £712m, seeing them drop from top spot after selling Morgan Schneiderlin, Memphis Depay and Wayne Rooney over the last 12 months.
